Mississippi’s medical waste disposal regulations are managed by the Department of Health - Health Facilities Licensure and Certification Division and the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Office of Pollution Control.

Refer to resources like the medical waste regulations in health care facilities and a fact sheet on medical waste management by the Department of Environmental Quality can be found here.

Infectious medical waste, except for sharps capable of puncturing or cutting, shall be contained in
in double disposable plastic bags or single bags (1.5 mils thick) that are:

  • impervious to moisture
  • strong enough to prevent ripping, tearing, or bursting under normal conditions of usage
  • securely tied so as to prevent leakage or expulsion of solid or liquid wasted during storage, handling, or transport
