Mississippi Medical Waste Requirements and Regulations

We care about your business needs and ensure that we are in compliance with Federal and State of Mississippi regulations. Mississippi’s medical waste disposal regulations are managed by the Department of Health - Health Facilities Licensure and Certification Division and the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Office of Pollution Control.

Refer to resources like the medical waste regulations in health care facilities and a fact sheet on medical waste management by the Department of Environmental Quality can be found here.

Infectious medical waste, except for sharps capable of puncturing or cutting, shall be contained in
in double disposable plastic bags or single bags (1.5 mils thick) that are:

  • impervious to moisture
  • strong enough to prevent ripping, tearing, or bursting under normal conditions of usage
  • securely tied so as to prevent leakage or expulsion of solid or liquid wasted during storage, handling, or transport

Infectious medical waste (except for sharps in approved containers) cannot be stored at a waste producing facility for more than 7 days above a temperature 6 C (38F).

Containment of infectious medical waste at the producing facility is permitted at or below a temperature of 0 C (32F) for a period of not more than 90 days without specific approval of the Department of Health.
