Indiana's Medical Waste Requirements and Regulations

We care about your business needs and ensure that we are in compliance with applicable Federal and State of Indiana regulations. Medical waste disposal regulations are managed by the Department of Health. Rule 3 on Infectious Waste from the Indiana Administrative Code can be found here.
Complete details on state requirements can be found by contacting the Indiana State Department of Health.

Infectious waste should be stored in a secure area that is locked, prevents exposure from the elements, and prominently displays the biohazard symbol.
Reusable containers used to store waste should be disinfected each time they are emptied, unless the surfaces are protected by disposable liner bags or devices that are removed with the waste.

Required written policies and procedure should contain, at minimum:

  • Regulatory requirements
  • Sanctions, including discipline and dismissal for failure to comply
  • Necessary instruction and materials, including protective garments
  • Maintain a record of training
