Indiana Infectious Waste Requirements and Regulations

We care about your business needs and will partner with you to help you maintain compliance with Federal and State of Indiana regulations.

This information is provided for general awareness purposes only and is not intended to summarize or capture all federal, State, or local requirements that may apply to a particular facility’s infectious waste. Reviewing this information is not a substitute for reading the applicable regulations, discussing with the appropriate authorities, or seeking legal advice.

Indiana’s infectious waste regulations are issued by the Indiana State Department of Health. Details on State requirements may be found by reviewing the code and on the Department of Health’s site

Indiana defines infectious waste as waste where epidemiological evidence indicates it is capable of transmitting a dangerous communicable disease and includes

  • Contaminated sharps or contaminated objects that could become contaminated sharps
  • Infectious biological cultures, associated biologicals, and agent stock
  • Pathological waste
  • Blood and blood products in liquid and semiliquid form
  • Laboratory animal carcasses, body parts, blood and body fluids in liquid and semiliquid form
  • Other waste that has been intermingled with infectious waste

Additional information and detail is available on MyStericycle.com and in the Indiana State Department of Health regulations.

Infectious waste should be stored in a secure area that is locked or otherwise secured to eliminate access by, or exposure, to the general public, provides protection from the elements and vermin, and prominently displays the biohazard symbol.
