Iowa Medical Waste Requirements and Regulations

We care about your business needs and ensure that we are in compliance with applicable Federal and State of Iowa regulations. Medical waste disposal regulations are managed by the Department of Natural Resources. Rules of special waste disposal can be found in Chapter 109 of the Iowa Administrative Code and definitions on solid waste management and disposal in Chapter 100 of the Iowa Administrative Code.
Complete details on state requirements can be found by contacting the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

All waste must be in containers and biomedical waste is required to be contained separately from other waste at the point of origin.

Waste should be stored in a secure location protected from animals, weather elements, and unintentional human exposure.

Regulated Medical Waste (Special Solid Waste) in Iowa includes:

  • Contaminated sharps, including glass vials containing materials defined as
infectious, suture needles, hypodermic needles, scalpel blades, and Pasteur pipettes
  • Cultures and stocks of infectious agents; discarded live and attenuated vaccines
  • Blood and blood products
  • Pathological waste
  • Contaminated animal carcasses; body parts and bedding of deliberately infected animals
