Wyoming Medical Waste Requirements and Regulations

We care about your business needs and ensure that we are in compliance with applicable Federal and State of Wyoming regulations. Wyoming’s medical waste disposal regulations are managed by the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality.

Currently, there are no specific rules or guidelines for the handling, treatment, and disposal of medical/infectious wastes in the State. State regulations do not specifically define medical or infectious waste. Please refer to this guidance document on medical waste treatment.

Medical Waste in Wyoming (Infectious Waste) includes

  • Cultures and stocks
  • Pathological waste
  • Human blood and blood products
  • Animal waste from exposed research animals
  • Isolation wastes
  • Sharps
  • Unused sharps

Regulated medical waste should be stored in a secure location that offers protection from theft, weather elements, and inadvertent human or animal exposure. It should not generate noxious odors.

For generators of medical/infectious wastes (hospitals, clinical laboratories, nursing and health care facilities, etc.) the Wyoming Division of Health and Medical Services has published standards, rules, and regulations that require such institutions to establish and follow acceptable plans controlling the collection, handling, segregation, treatment, and disposal of medical/infectious wastes.
