Michigan Medical Waste Requirements and Regulations

We care about your business needs and ensure that we are in compliance with all Federal and State of Michigan regulations. Michigan’s medical waste disposal regulations are managed by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and the Michigan Medical Waste Regulatory Act (MWRA). To see guidance documents and Michigan’s medical waste disposal regulations, visit the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality here .

A written Medical Waste Management Plan is required for your facility. For a sample Medical Waste Management Plan, please refer to the Department of Environmental Quality here .

Storage of waste on premises cannot exceed 90 days.
Waste stored outside must be in a secured area or locked in a container that weighs MORE than 500 lbs. Do not compact the waste. Generators must prevent access to the secured area by vermin or unauthorized individuals.

Employees who handle medical waste must be trained before assuming duties. Refresher training must be provided when a change directly affects an employee’s duties.

Generators must create and keep employee training records for a minimum of 3 years, containing:

  • Employee’s name
  • Job classification
  • Dates of training

Generator registration is required. Registration fees are shown below:

  • Private practice office with fewer than 4 licensees: $50.00;
  • $20.00 for each additional licensee
  • $80.00 for four or more licensees;
  • Certificate of registration is valid for 3 years;
  • Registration forms are available on the Department of Environmental Quality website here.
