Louisiana's Medical Waste Requirements and Regulations

We care about your business needs and ensure that we are in compliance with applicable Federal and State of Louisiana regulations. Medical waste disposal regulations are managed by the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and the Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH).

Complete details on state requirements for the Management of Refuse, Infectious Waste, Medical Waste, and Potentially Infectious Biomedical Waste can be found in the Louisiana Administrative Code (LAC) here.

Containers must be closed securely and clearly labeled with the words “Potentially Infectious Biomedical Waste”, “Medical Waste”, or “Infectious Waste”.

Waste must be stored in a secure location to protect from theft, vandalism, unintentional human and animal exposure, rain, and wind. Containers and plastic bags must be waterproof and rip-resistant.

Medical waste stored outside requires another layer of containment. The outer containers must be made of strong, watertight, not easily corroded, rodent, and insect proof material.

A Biomedical Waste Operating Plan, a Contingency Plan, and a Spill Clean-Up Procedure must be maintained.

A Small Health Care and Medical Facility Generator generates:

  • LESS than 55 lbs of Potentially Infectious Biomedical waste OR
  • LESS than 11 lbs of sharps per month

A Large Health Care and Medical Facility Generator generates:

  • 55 lbs or MORE of Potentially Infectious Biomedical Waste and NOT including sharps OR
  • 11 lbs of sharps per month
