Tennessee Medical Waste Requirements and Regulations

We care about your business needs and make sure that we are in compliance with Federal and State of Tennessee regulations.

Tennessee’s medical waste disposal regulations are managed by the Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC). Details on state requirements can be found here and by contacting the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.

Special Wastes includes solid wastes either difficult or dangerous to manage, including:

  • Sludge, bulky wastes, pesticide wastes, medical wastes, industrial wastes, hazardous waste which these are not subject to regulations under Rules 0400-12-01-.03 through 0400-12-01-.07 
  • Liquid wastes, friable asbestos wastes, and combustion wastes

Medical Wastes includes solid wastes like:

  • Generated by hospitalized patients who are isolated to protect others from communicable diseases
  • Cultures and stocks of infectious agents, specimen cultures from medical and pathological laboratories, cultures and stocks of infectious agents from research and industrial laboratories, wastes from the production of biologicals, discarded live and attenuated vaccines, and culture dishes and devices used to transfer, inoculate, and mix cultures
  • Waste human blood and blood products such as serum, plasma, and other blood components

Special Waste Approval for Generators

Per guidance provided by Mr. Bassam.Faleh@TN.gov 615 532 0780: Unless the generator is using a permitted waste hauler, such as Stericycle, that properly treats the waste and ensures its final disposition in accordance with TN requirements, then the following regulations apply:

  • Persons who generate and wish to process or dispose of a special waste must make application to the Commissioner for waste evaluation. Also such persons who generate and wish to process or dispose of sludges, bulky wastes, pesticide wastes, medical wastes…must make application to the Commissioner for waste evaluation unless the Commissioner determines such is not necessary. 
  • Whom Do I Contact For Applications, Assistance And Other Sources Of Information Applications and assistance can be obtained by contacting the appropriate Environmental Field Office. In addition, the UT Center for Industrial Services field office is available for assistance with applications and procedures for all environmental permits.
