North Carolina Medical Waste Requirements and Regulations

We care about your business needs and make sure that we are in compliance with applicable Federal and State of North Carolina regulations. Medical waste disposal is regulated by the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ).

North Carolina categorizes Regulated Medical Waste as:

  1. Blood and body fluids (more than 20 ml)
  2. Microbiological waste
  3. Pathological waste

Trash compactors cannot be used when storing medical waste. Medical waste must be clean, labeled and marked properly, and only accessible to those authorized. The storage area must be ventilated and floor drains discharge directly to sanitary sewage system.

Generators (shippers) of more than 50lbs per month must maintain records for each shipment which includes:

  • Amount of waste by number of packages
  • Date shipped off-site
  • Name of transporter
  • Name of storage or treatment facility
