New Mexico Medical Waste Requirements and Regulations

We care about your business needs and make sure that we are in compliance with applicable Federal and State of New Mexico regulations. Medical waste disposal is regulated by the New Mexico Environment Department Solid Waste Bureau. Refer to pages 13-14 and 102-107 for regulations on solid waste management regulations here.

Every generator is required to prepare and maintain a Waste Management Plan that identifies:

  • Type of waste the person generates or handles
  • Segregation, packaging, labeling, collection, storage, and transportation procedures
  • Treatment or disposal methods
  • Transporter and disposal facility
  • Person responsible for management of the infectious waste

There is a 90 day storage limit from the date the waste was placed in storage.

Trash compactors cannot be used when storing medical waste. Medical waste must be protected from animals and the elements, and only accessible to those authorized. The storage area must be ventilated to the outdoors.

There should be warning signs legible from 25 ft.
