New Hampshire Medical Waste Requirements and Regulations

New Hampshire’s medical waste disposal regulations are managed by the Department of Environmental Services (DES) Waste Management Division. New Hampshire’s medical waste disposal regulations can be found in the New Hampshire Code of Administrative Rules.

According to the State of New Hampshire, medical waste is defined in 11 categories:

  1. Cultures and stocks of infectious agents
  2. Human pathological wastes
  3. Waste human blood and blood products
  4. Sharps
  5. Contaminated animal carcasses, body parts, bedding
  6. Wastes from human and animal patient care that were in contact with infectious agents
  7. Contaminated laboratory wastes
  8. Dialysis wastes
  9. Discarded medical equipment and parts
  10. Biological isolation wastes
  11. Genetically altered living organisms and preparations made from them
  12. Other wastes from medical care that are deemed a threat to human health

Storage Requirements:

  • Stored at room temperature for a maximum of 72 hours
  • In a pre-designated location protected from elements and animals
  • Labeled conspicuously
  • Clearly display Biohazard waste or symbol
  • Outdoors- securely locked
  • Inside-limited to authorized personnel only
