Montana Medical Waste Requirements and Regulations

We care about your business needs and ensure that we are in compliance with Federal and State of Montana regulations. Montana’s medical waste disposal regulations are managed by the Department of of Environmental Quality (DEQ).

Refer to the following resources on Montana’s Infectious Waste Management Act and the Administrative Rules of Montana 17.50.1501 to 17.50.1508.

Montana defines Regulated Medical Waste (Infectious Waste) as:

  • Waste capable of producing disease
  • Infectious waste includes but is not limited to:
    • Cultures and stocks of infectious agents and associated biologicals
    • Human pathological waste, including tissues, organs, and body parts removed during surgery or an autopsy
    • Free-flowing waste human blood and products of blood, including serum, plasma, and other blood components and items soaked or saturated with blood
    • Sharps that have been used in patient care, medical research, or industrial laboratories.

Generators (shippers) and transporters of infectious waste are required to develop a contingency plan to handle spills and equipment failure.

Employees who handle or manage infectious waste must receive training provided by the employer that is adequate to ensure safe performance of duties.
