Massachusetts Medical Waste Requirements and Regulations

We care about your business needs and ensure that we are in compliance with applicable Federal and State of Massachusetts regulations. Medical waste disposal regulations are managed by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. Complete details on state requirements can be found here.

Massachusetts requires certain recordkeeping and documentation from your facility. A recordkeeping log is required for medical or biological wastes shipped off-site for treatment. The recordkeeping log shall specify:

  • Exact date of each shipment
  • Total number of containers
  • Type of waste
  • Total combined weight or volume
  • Name of the transporter with transporter identification number (if applicable)
  • Verification (via check box) of shipping papers generated with receipt of corresponding medical waste tracking forms for each shipment
  • Printed name and signature of the person responsible for shipping the waste

Along with the recordkeeping log, the following should be retained:

  • A written contingency plan incorporated into the recordkeeping log for spills and accidents and have sufficient tools and materials available to implement these procedures in case of a spill or accident
  • A copy of all applicable registrations and safety data sheets (SDS) for chemicals used in approved disinfection methods pursuant to 105 CMR 480.150
  • Copies of all shipping papers with corresponding medical waste tracking forms. A signed copy of the shipping paper must be received from the treatment facility within 30 days of shipment.
