Stericycle’s Commitment to Compliance Protects the Well-Being of Customers, Team Members and Communities

With the recent relaunch of our corporate website and refreshed brand, Stericycle is more dedicated than ever to protecting your health and well-being safely, responsibly, and sustainably. Safety and sustainability include keeping up-to-date with regulations and best practices in medical waste disposal, secure document destruction, and patient engagement, so an essential tool for delivering our brand promise to protect what matters is our expertise in compliance.

Our team of in-house experts have years of experience with regulatory compliance in the waste disposal industry. Through knowledge and continuous research of regulations and industry best practices, this team helps ensure our services and solutions meet or exceed regulatory standards. And we also help customers mitigate risk, protect their staff, and improve the quality, security, and consistency of their customer and patient interactions with compliance resources and training.

For example, our Steri-Safe® Solutions include HIPAA and OSHA compliance training, resources, and consulting – both in-person and online. We provide a web-based library of essential compliance resources to help our customers stay up-to date, document and track training, and customize their compliance plans. These solutions save our customers’ time and help them navigate the regulatory maze to help keep their staff safe and compliant.

“Our healthcare customers are fundamentally focused on taking care of their patients,” says Meg Moynihan, Director of Marketing and Strategy at Stericycle. “We give them a framework that’s scalable and sustainable, which is where we deliver value.”

This includes helping our customers centralize communications to deliver cohesive, HIPAA-compliant brand experiences, which frees up staff to focus on in-person patient care. Our systems are engineered to protect our customers’ health information with multiple layers of security, including encryption, intrusion detection and prevention, and physical safeguards.

We also offer our healthcare customers coding compliance solutions, which provide physicians and other healthcare providers with professional chart auditing services and a comprehensive evaluation and management (E/M) coding compliance package.

These solutions are optimized by our ongoing commitment to understanding and complying with regulations. “Our programs and services are designed not only to keep our customers compliant, but our own operations compliant,” says Cara Simaga, Stericycle’s Senior Director of Regulatory Affairs

As a global company with a large North American service area, Stericycle needs to meet the medical waste disposal compliance requirements of OSHA, Department of Transportation, Environmental Protection Agency, Food and Drug Administration, and state and local regulations.

“Our treatment processes, our transportation processes, and our facilities are all regulated; federal, state, municipal - it’s a complex net of regulations,” commented Dale Rich, Vice President of Global Incineration Operations and DEA Compliance. “Safety and compliance are first and foremost – productivity is secondary to those. We have complete focus on customers’ safety and compliance.”

For customers within and outside healthcare, we have sustainability and waste optimization services that guide them to compliant and sustainable disposal techniques  across multiple waste streams. “In the solid waste industry, it’s becoming increasingly important to understand what is and isn’t medical waste, and how different regulatory bodies define it,” says Cara Simaga.

And our Shred-it secure information destruction services dispose of documents in compliance with the federal Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act, and adhere to the stringent security procedures established by the National Association of Information Destruction (NAID).

With our products and services, facilities and fleets, and technology and logistics, Stericycle is committed to compliance within our operations and for our customers.
