Pennsylvania Regulated Medical Waste Requirements and Regulations

We care about your business needs and will partner with you to help you maintain compliance with Federal and the State of Pennsylvania regulations.

This information is provided for general awareness purposes only and is not intended to summarize or capture all federal, State, or local requirements that may apply to a particular facility’s regulated medical waste. Reviewing this information is not a substitute for reading the applicable regulations, discussing with the appropriate authorities, or seeking legal advice.

Pennsylvania’s regulated medical waste regulations are issued by the Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP). Details on State requirements including Regulated Medical and Chemotherapeutic Waste may be found by reviewing the regulations and on the State’s site

Regulated medical waste includes:

  • Cultures and stocks
  • Pathological waste
  • Human blood and body fluid waste
  • Animal wastes
  • Isolation wastes
  • Used sharps

Additional information and details are available on MyStericycle.com as well as in the PA DEP regulations.

Regulated medical waste must be stored to eliminate, minimize, and remove vectors that can spread disease. Regulated medical waste may be stored on-site for a maximum of 30 days from the date the waste container is full or the date the generator seals the container. If regulated medical waste and/or chemotherapeutic waste become odorous during storage, it must be removed within 3 days.
