Michigan’s medical waste regulations are managed by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy. Details on State requirements may be found by reviewing the code and on the State’s site

Michigan defines medical waste to include the following items:

  • Cultures and stocks of infectious agents and associated biologicals, including lab and biological production wastes, discarded live and attenuated vaccines, culture dishes, and related devices
  • Liquid human and animal waste, including blood, blood products, and body fluids
  • Pathological wastes
  • Human blood waste and products of blood and blood components
  • Sharps
  • Wastes from animals exposed to agents infectious to humans

Additional information and details are available on MyStericycle.com as well as in the Michigan Department of Environment, Great lakes, and Energy regulations.

Medical waste should be stored to protect and prevent release any time before ultimate disposal. Medical waste should be stored to prevent odors and infectious agents from coming into contact with air or individuals. Waste cannot be stored longer than 90 days and if stored outside, it must be in a secure area or in a locked container that weighs more than 500 pounds.
