Colorado Medical Waste Requirements and Regulations

We care about your business needs and will partner with you to help you maintain compliance with Federal and State of Colorado regulations.

This information is provided for general awareness purposes only and is not intended to summarize or capture all federal, state, or local requirements that may apply to a particular facility’s regulated medical waste.  Reviewing this information is not a substitute for reading the applicable regulations, discussing with the appropriate authorities, or seeking legal advice.

Colorado’s medical waste regulations are issued by the Department of Public Health and Environment. Details on State requirements may be found by reviewing the regulations on the State’s site.

Colorado defines medical waste to include any infectious, pharmaceutical or trace chemotherapy waste generated in a healthcare setting.

Any waste known or suspected to be contaminated with a transmissible infectious agent that is capable of causing disease or injury is a potentially infectious waste. Potentially infectious wastes may include:

  • Cultures and stocks
  • Wastes from the production of biologicals
  • Devices used to transfer, inoculate, and mix cultures
  • Isolation & Biohazardous wastes
  • Contaminated animal bedding
  • Items that are caked with or capable of releasing blood or body fluids
  • Contaminated wastes from surgery, autopsy, or other medical or lab procedures
  • Unbroken blood vials, drainage sets, dialysis wastes, suction canisters, hemovacs, or IV bags and tubing (without need attached) containing blood or body fluids

Additional information and details are available on MyStericycle.com and in the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment regulations.

Medical waste should be stored in an area marked with the biohazard symbol and the word “Caution – Medical Waste storage Area – Unauthorized Persons Keep Out.” Medical waste must be stored to protect the integrity of the packaging from the elements and vermin.

Medical Waste that can become odorous and that is not refrigerated, frozen, or treated on-site may be stored for a maximum of 30 calendar days. Medical that is packaged to meet US DOT requirements and kept refrigerated or frozen (45ºF or lower), may be stored up to 90 days on-site.

Sharp containers and trace chemo waste may be stored for up to 90 days and must meet labeled or color coded in accordance with OSHA requirements.
