Georgia Medical Waste Requirements and Regulations

We care about your business needs and ensure that we are in compliance with Federal and State of Georgia regulations. Medical waste in Georgia is regulated by the Division of Materials and Waste Management at the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Environmental Protection Division (EPD), and Solid Waste Management Program. Complete details on the Rules and Regulations of the State of Georgia can be found here.

Georgia defines Regulated Medical Waste (Biomedical Waste) in 7 categories:

  1. Pathological waste
  2. Biomedical waste (blood, blood products, exudates, secretions, suctioning, other body fluids)
  3. Culture and stocks
  4. Contaminated animal carcasses, body parts, their bedding, and other animal wastes
  5. Sharps (any discarded article that may cause punctures or cuts)
  6. Chemotherapy waste
  7. Discarded medical equipment and parts, excluding expendable supplies and materials included in the above wastes, which were not decontaminated and in contact with infectious agents

Biomedical waste is required to be contained separately from other waste at the point of origin. Store waste in a secure location that is protected from animals, rain, wind, and unintentional human exposure. The storage area must not provide a breeding place or food source for insects and rodents.
