Kansas Medical Waste Requirements and Regulations

We care about your business needs and ensure that we are in compliance with applicable Federal and State of Kansas regulations. Medical waste disposal regulations are managed by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Division of Environment Bureau Waste Management.

A compilation of solid waste regulations and statutes published by the KDHE can be found here. Complete details on state requirements can be found by contacting the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

The state of Kansas considers regulated medical waste (medical services waste) as:

  • solid waste materials which are potentially capable of causing disease or injury
  • generated in connection with human or animal care through inpatient and outpatient services

Waste should be stored in a container that prevents disease transmission or injury. All reusable containers used to store infectious waste shall be cleaned and disinfected before each use.

Hypodermic needles and syringes, scalpel blades, suture needles, or other sharp objects shall be stored only in a rigid, puncture resistant container that has been closed to prevent the escape of any material, including liquids or aerosols.
